As an artist and business owner myself, I found myself in exactly this situation more than 10 years ago. As a new business and developing recording artist, cash was tight and so was time. With a steadfast determination and a ton of creative vision, I set out to learn everything I could about graphic and web design. My years of self-taught learning and branding my own projects and business garnered the attention of professionals in the music industry and I found myself working for fellow artists, folk festivals, arts organizations and professional businesses alike. Now, Safety Lemon Designs is a one stop shop for everything I needed when I started out. Wait, what the heck is a Safety Lemon?
After years developing a myriad of skills to help build up my own business and brand, fellow artists and creatives started reaching out to me for help with their design and web projects. Now the thing about artists is that we are a quirky and superstitious bunch. I am no exception and this is where the “Safety Lemon” comes into our story.
Many creatives have superstitions related to their art. As a designer and artist, I have a process of putting myself into a creative space and it involves a lemon. Several years ago, I developed a habit of picking up a lemon just for “safety” while at the grocery store; never having any real need for one, but all the same collecting them every time I shopped. Fast forward to a burst of creative time on a music tour a few years back; I had begun gathering lemons on the west coast and as the creative juices flowed, I attributed it to the magic of my safety lemon. I toted that lemon halfway across the country as if it were my muse. All the way through the creative process of songwriting and designing our album covers and posters, into the studio, and eventually to my home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. When a year later I founded my graphic design and web design company I could think of no better name than “Safety Lemon Designs”.
As an independent artist, I’ve worked on hundreds of posters, logos, merchandise ideas, and more. More recently I have been developing the web design side of my business, always adapting and finding creative solutions for my clients to help them meet their business needs. After more than 10 years as a professional problem solver, I pride myself on finding a solution to nearly any design issue.
But I digress: why should you hire a kooky, superstitious creative to help you build your brand?
